Blue Roses. 2021. Acrylic on Canvas.

I made this painting in response to reading the play The Glass Menagerie for the very first time. Each rose on the canvas represents a character in the play, a member of the family. The rose on the bottom left represents Amanda Wingfield, the boldest member of the family. The rose on the top right, Laura Wingfield. Fragile, shy, hiding behind her mother and brother. The bottom right rose, half off the canvas, is Tom Wingfield, son and brother, saddled with supporting his family at a young age, yearning for a fresh start. Finally, the top left flower, facing Laura, represents the Gentleman Caller. He’s not part of the family, somewhat connected, somewhat not. He wants to be, but is not quite fully in the picture. The painting itself is named Blue Roses after the Gentleman Caller’s childhood nickname for Laura. This is one of the most thoughtful pieces I’ve created, and I love it so much.
